Essential Gardening Tools and How to Maintain Them

As a professional garden designer based in North Jersey, having the right tools is non-negotiable. Tools are an extension of your hands, and their quality can make or break your gardening experience. Here are some of my favorite tools and maintenance tips to keep them in top shape. For a more extensive list of recommended tools, visit my Amazon wishlist on my learning page.

1. Felco Pruners

A gardener's best friend, Felco Pruning Shears are known for their exceptional craftsmanship and durability. Their ergonomic design makes pruning a breeze, whether you’re deadheading flowers or trimming shrubs.

Maintenance Tip: After each use, wipe down the blades with a clean, damp cloth and dry them thoroughly. Occasionally, oil the moving parts with a light machine oil to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. Sharpen the blades with a dedicated sharpening tool to keep cuts clean and precise.

2. Felco Folding Saw

The Felco Folding Saw is an excellent tool for larger branch pruning due to its sharp, durable blade and ergonomic design. Its folding mechanism makes it compact and easy to store, while the high-quality steel blade ensures smooth, efficient cuts through thicker branches. The saw's lightweight construction reduces hand fatigue, making it ideal for extended use. Whether you're tackling deadwood or shaping larger plants, the Felco Folding Saw is a reliable tool that provides precision and ease, making it a must-have for garden maintenance.

3. Hori Hori Knife

The Hori Hori knife is a versatile tool, perfect for digging, cutting, and even planting bulbs. Its serrated edge adds an extra layer of functionality and is much more heavy duty than regular gardening spades.

Maintenance Tip: Keep the blade clean and dry after use. Regularly apply a thin layer of oil to the blade to prevent rust. Store it in a sheath or toolbox to avoid accidental damage.

4. Flexzilla Garden Hose

This hose is by far the best. It’s incredibly lightweight, never kinks and is drinking water safe.

Maintenance Tip: Empty hose before freeze and store protected from winter ice.

5. Dramm One-Touch Watering Nozzle

Watering is a joy with the Dramm Watering Nozzle, which has 9 different watering settings. The one-touch valve allows you to control water flow effortlessly.

Maintenance Tip: Store the wand indoors during winter to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Regularly check for blockages in the nozzle and clean it with warm water and a soft brush, if needed.

General Maintenance Tips

  • Clean After Use: Dirt and moisture are the enemies of gardening tools. Always clean them off before storage.

  • Sharpen Blades: Sharp tools not only work better but also reduce the risk of injury. Use a sharpening tool regularly.

  • Prevent Rust: Apply a thin coat of oil to metal parts to keep rust at bay.

Investing in high-quality tools like those from Felco and maintaining them properly will save you time, effort, and money in the long run. For gardeners in Morris County and throughout North Jersey, these tools are must-haves for making the most of your outdoor spaces!
